Mental Health First Aid: what the training is — and what it isn’t

Pharmacy teams often notice when someone is struggling. Mental Health First Aid training helps people respond with more confidence — within clear limits.

People visit pharmacies regularly, and pharmacy teams are often among the first to notice when someone seems to be having a hard time. Knowing what to say — and what not to say — can make a real difference.

What the course covers

Delivered by a currently certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor, the course teaches participants how to recognize possible signs of a mental health or substance-use challenge, offer initial support, and encourage connection with appropriate professional or community resources.

What it does not do

Mental Health First Aid is an early-intervention education program. It does not prepare participants to diagnose or provide therapy, and it is not a substitute for professional or emergency care.

If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. In the United States you can call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at any time.

NPHLA will publish training dates as they are confirmed. Get training updates to hear first.
