Starting a mentoring program for students and technicians

How to set up a simple, sustainable mentoring program in a pharmacy — from matching to the first meeting.

A pharmacy student studies at a wooden desk with notes, textbooks and a plant.

Mentoring is one of the most reliable ways to grow future pharmacy leaders. A good program is simple: clear expectations, a light structure and regular check-ins.

  1. Decide what the program is for — career exploration, skill building or leadership.
  2. Invite mentors and mentees and ask about goals and availability.
  3. Match thoughtfully and introduce each pair personally.
  4. Suggest a rhythm, such as a 30-minute conversation every month for six months.
  5. Check in halfway and at the end to learn what to improve.
